Measuring Tips: Overhang

The details matter when it comes to custom drapery hardware. We spend every day creating curtain rods and custom options that truly bring our customers’ vision to life. One measurement that we find ourselves talking about often is Overhang.

  • Overhang refers to how far the rod extends beyond the window trim.
  • Overhang typically ranges from 4" to 12" on each side of the window or door, and may depend on factors such as door/window size, aesthetic preferences, space constraints, and curtain material and width. You'll want to make sure you have room to stack your curtains clear of the window or door. Of course we see overhang outside of this range.
  • A single window may need only 4" to 6" of overhang, while a wide sliding door or long bank of windows may need at least 10" to 12".
  • If you're tight on space, a French return may be good option to consider since the return leg allow for extra stacking space.
